A picture window is a fixed window: glass set in a frame, with no sash and nothing that opens. Because there's no meeting rail or second sash, nothing crosses the view. CWS describes its fixed window as offering “high visibility” with “unobstructed natural light.” Picture windows are often the large center pane, with opening windows beside them.
No: once a window opens, it isn't a picture window anymore. What you can do is pair one with windows that open, like a casement on each side or a single-hung below. ES Windows makes its ES-5100 fixed window to match its ES-5000 casement for that kind of pairing. We work out the layout with you at the measure.
For the view and the light. A fixed pane has no sash, no meeting rail and no lock in the glass area, so you see more outside through the same opening. It's also one less window to open, close and lock. The trade-off is air: if that wall holds the room's only window, choose a style that opens.
It depends on the product: each window is approved at the sizes it was tested at, and the exact limit differs by model. ES Windows even makes a glass wall system, the ES-FX4017, for “large, jumbo-sized glass panels.” We measure your opening at the free in-home visit and quote a product approved for that size.
Yes. CWS lists frosted and obscure glass among its options, which helps on a bathroom or street-facing wall, along with gray tint and Low-E. One customer wrote that “you can't see through the frosted bathroom windows at all from outside even at night with the light on.” We go through glass choices at the measure.
Yes, if you like the look. CWS lists grilles as an option on its picture window, and ES Windows offers flat or ogee-profile grid bars on the ES-5100. If the open view is the reason you want a picture window, you can leave them off. Either way, it's your choice at the free in-home measure.
