A casement is hinged on one side. Turning the crank at the bottom swings the sash outward, away from the room, and turning it back pulls it closed against the frame. CWS describes its casement as “hinged at the side” and opening “with the crank of a low-profile handle,” and the crank folds away when you're not using it.
Yes. The sash swings out, so the window needs clear space outside it. Next to a walkway, a pool deck or patio seating, the open sash sits in that space, which is why we look at what's outside each window at the measure. Inside, nothing moves into the room except the crank handle at the sill.
A casement's whole sash swings clear, so the full opening lets air through. A single-hung only opens its bottom sash, so at most about half the window is open. Where airflow matters, a casement wins; where nothing can swing outside, a single-hung or a horizontal roller is the practical choice. The drawing near the top of this page shows it opening.
